Tennessee Wall Trail Day

Rock climbers who care enough to give back to the land spend a day at the Tennessee Wall working on a section of trail and...of course...climbing the beautiful sandstone cliffs.

If we want other people, especially the generations who will follow us, to experience the wonder of the outdoors, we have to make sure there are still wild places to be experienced. That’s the goal of the Southeastern Climbers Coalition, a non-profit group dedicated to preserving great places to climb across the southeast. Recently they spent some time out at the Tennessee Wall, just outside Chattanooga, working to maintain a trail there…and of course, do some climbing. Wild Side Guide Janet Ivey shares the story of their day.

Southeastern Climbers Coalition (SCC) members and volunteers are climbers from Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Arkansas and elsewhere who have joined forces to preserve access to climbing areas in the region. Climbing is not a requirement for participating in one of their trail days, so don’t let that stop you from lending a hand. But if you are interested in giving climbing a try, they’ll be glad to help you get started. To learn more about SCC and how you can get involved in their preservation work, visit their website at www.seclimbers.org.

One of the SCC’s partner organizations is Access Fund, a national advocacy organization that keeps U.S. climbing areas open and conserves the climbing environment. Founded in 1991, the Access Fund supports and represents over 6.8 million climbers nationwide in all forms of climbing: rock, ice, mountaineering, and bouldering.
