Shooting for an Education

When students take aim at the Tennessee Clay Target Program's annual championships, they are shooting for a lot more than just a trophy.

Nestled along the banks of the Cumberland River, the Nashville Gun Club is the largest shotgun sports venue in Tennessee. It’s the perfect location for the Tennessee Wildlife Federation‘s Scholastic Clay Target Program state championships, held every year in June. Although surrounded by the rolling hills of Tennessee, the ground is level here for the thousands of young people who come to compete. It doesn’t matter if your team comes from a big city or a tiny town…if your kids can shoot, are committed and stay focused, they can also win. Wild Side Guide Annette Nole Hall takes us to the course to meet some of the best high school shooters anywhere.

Bethel University and Martin Methodist here in Tennessee already offer full ride scholarships to some of the state’s top shooters. But other colleges and universities are quickly zoning in on the sport that, in some communities, is now more popular than golf. There are also scholarships given out each year at the state tournament as well as money offered for higher education through private foundations. You can learn more about TNSCTP and how you can get involved on the Tennessee Wildlife Federation’s website, tnwf.org.
