When Sheriff Monte Belew in Henry County took a long look around him, he saw big wooded areas filled with deer, deputies who loved to hunt, and too many people struggling through hard times without enough to eat. So it just made good sense to him to build a deer meat processing plant. As Wild Side Guide Steve Hall found out, it’s turned out to be a chance for jail inmates to serve others while serving time.
You don’t have to be a deputy to donate deer to the Henry County Sheriff’s Department. They’ll accept harvested deer every Saturday and Sunday of the muzzle loader and rifle seasons.
And for folks living in other counties, whether you hunt or not, you can help by making a donation to the Hunters for the Hungry program, which has provided more than 3 million meals to families across the state.
