Chris’ First Crappie

It's a special day when a young angler catches his first fish...on a Tennessee lake that's becoming know as one of the best in the U.S. for catching crappie.

Not long ago Fishhound.com listed the best crappie fishing lakes in the United States. It wasn’t much of a surprise that Reelfoot Lake and Kentucky Lake were high on that list. But believe it or not Chickamauga Lake was also on it, listed 14th in the nation. We’ve seen the incredible bass catches coming from the Chattanooga lake, but it seems it’s “the perfect storm” for more than one popular game fish. Wild Side Guide Richard Simms loves to go long-line trolling for crappie during the early spring bite, and recently he took along a special pair of partners.

If you or someone you know catches their first fish, be sure to apply for a First Fish Award from the TWRA, designed to commemorate that special moment with a framable certificate identifying the angler, the fish caught, and other details of that moment. The size of the fish and age of the angler don’t matter…only that the fish is their first and that it was caught in Tennessee.

If you’re interested in becoming a mentor like Lance, you can find out how by visiting the Big Brothers-Big Sisters program website.

When he’s not working on Wild Side stories, Richard Simms is often out on the water for one of his other occupations…fishing guide. You can reach him at Scenic City Fishing Charters to book a fantastic fishing trip.
