Chickamauga Big Bass

These days, if you fish a tournament on Chickamauga Lake, you'll need to catch fish that average at least 8lbs a piece to have a chance at winning. We'll see how the lake has earned a big bass reputation.

If you’re a hardcore fishermen, you’ve probably heard all about the monster bass found in places like Lake Okeechobee in Florida, Falcon Lake in Texas, or Guntersville in North Alabama. Now you can add a Tennessee lake to that list. B.A.S.S., one of the most prestigious and well-known fishing organizations in the world, has declared Chickamauga Lake the sixth best bass fishing lake in the entire United States. In early 2012 everyone was blown away by the huge bass, averaging eight pounds apiece, that were winning local tournaments. Wild Side Guide Richard Simms takes out on the water to see how the lake has earned its new big bass reputation.

The Florida bass stocking program costs the TWRA around 75-thousand dollars a year, but no doubt most bass anglers say it is money well spent. And they’ll be wondering if their next cast could match, or beat, the 14 pound 8 ounce record set way back in 1954.

To learn more about fishing in Tennessee, visit the TWRA website. You can even purchase your license online.

When he’s not working on Wild Side stories, Richard Simms is often out on the water for one of his other occupations…fishing guide. You can reach him at Scenic City Fishing Charters to book a fantastic fishing trip.
