Cave Snails

University of Tennessee Knoxville graduate student Nick Gladstone gains entrance to a Dickson County cave that has not been explored since 1962. As part of his master's thesis, Nick is searching for an often elusive and very small cave snail.

A retired educator recently reminded us that the years spent in college can be some of the best!  She talked of the freedom you have and how you are encouraged to inquire and explore.  So it seemed only fitting, the very next morning, to meet up with a college student searching for a tiny and often elusive Cave snail.

Along with Nick’s thesis, everything the team found will be reported to state biologists to help provide a better picture of cave biodiversity in Middle Tennessee. And the people in Vanleer should be pleased to hear that the happy biological community, that hadn’t been researched in Columbia Caverns since 1962. still indicates their water is still remarkably clean.
