It’s not hard to find a place to hike in Tennessee; there are many trails that spread across our beautiful state. One of those is the Fiery Gizzard, recognized by many as one of the top trails in the country. Making its way through the heart of the South Cumberland Plateau, the Gizzard is a rugged, special place, filled with beauty and history. Wild Side Guide Ken Tucker takes us to a trail crafted by the hands and hearts of caring people…and introduces us to a few folks we all owe a big “thank you.”
While hiking the entire 12.5 mile trail is a strenuous undertaking, there are shorter, looping sections on either end that are perfect for those who want an easier, more relaxing experience. Friends of South Cumberland and The Land Trust for Tennessee are two groups trying to raise money to purchase some of the privately held land around the trail, especially the view shed. This earlier Wild Side story tells how a large section of land along the trail was saved from development.
