Nestled between the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers, the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area is a haven for up to 250 different species of birds and a great location for taking pictures of wild creatures. But some times that’s easier said than done, especially when the object of the photograph is a powerful flier with eyesight 4 times better than a person with perfect vision. That’s where patience and persistence come in to play for wildlife photographer Melodie Cunningham who has developed a special relationship with the eagles in the area. As Wild Side Guide Bill Cody found out, the results are amazing.

Mel lives in Murray, Kentucky and is often found out at Land Between the Lakes, which she considers her “backyard”…mostly because she grew up in the area and remembers going there when she was a kid, before it became a National Recreation Area.
The Land Between The Lakes is a 170,000-acre National Recreation Area located on a peninsula between Kentucky Lake (Tennessee River) and Lake Barkley (Cumberland River). The area was designated a National Recreation Area by President John F. Kennedy in 1963. It was originally managed by the Tennessee Valley Authority but is now managed by the United States Forest Service, with 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline, 200 miles of paved roads, and 500 miles of trails.
