Friendly Fire at May Prairie

The May Prairie Natural Area is on fire! This story demonstrates how state scientists are using flames to help preserve the natural landscape of this magnificent prairie and wetland.

The May Prairie is probably the hottest natural area in Tennessee right now.  And we say that facetiously because the last time we were there…it was on fire!  This was a blaze that was set on purpose…not by an arsonists…but by scientists from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation and Tennessee Division of Forestry.  May Prairie is a very lovely place, where you can walk and enjoy the many colorful flowers which include some rare species, and it’s the only place in the state where you’ll see a snow orchid. Fire is just one of the tools being use to help reclaim and restore this land to what nature intended.
