Exploring Lost Cove Cave

A ranger at South Cumberland State Park takes viewers through the "Buggytop," one of the largest cave entrances in the Southeast, and deep inside Lost Cove Cave to explore an underground wilderness.

This story takes us on a journey to a place that’s marvelous and majestic…yet dark and mysterious…a destination that’s tranquil, but full of life.  It is an underground wilderness beneath Carter Natural Area in South Cumberland State Park where explorers can take a guided tour through the “Buggytop,” one of the biggest cave entrances in the Southeast…and then deep into Lost Cove Cave.  The Cave is open to the public April 1 through November 1.  Appointments are required during the winter months while bats are hibernating.   Visitors are asked to take precautions to help avoid the spread of White Nose Syndrome, which is deadly to bats.  Be aware, the hike down to the cave is about two and a half miles of fairly rugged terrain.
