Champions of Conservation

Wild Side is reflecting on the work of two champions of conservation, Tony Campbell and Mitchell Parks, who led a charge to rescue wildlife in Tennessee and restore populations of animals that were slowly disappearing in many parts of the state.

We share the woods with a whole world of wildlife.  We don’t always see them, because people are perceived as a threat…and for good reason.  But it’s not surprising to spot a deer walking by, or get a glimpse of a flock of turkeys.  We are very fortunate in Tennessee, with a lot of places to enjoy wildlife watching or to go hunting and fishing.  That hasn’t happened by accident.  It takes work and vision by people who appreciate the outdoors and want to protect it.   Two of those people, Tony Campbell and Mitchell Parks, came along at a time when it was unusual to see a deer or a turkey in some parts of Tennessee.  These two men made a big difference, and are leaving a legacy as champions of conservation.  Their efforts came while they were working with the Tennessee Conservation League, which is now the Tennessee Wildlife Federation.  And their work resulted in a new way of managing wildlife through the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.
