Bertha’s Environmental Legacy

One of the most valuable tour guides in the state is also one of the oldest to win the Governor's Award for Stewardship, one of the most prestigious recognitions for environmental champions.

Having dedicated almost her entire life to protecting our natural resources, Bertha Crietzberg has touched the lives of many people she doesn’t even know. Now in her 90’s, Bertha has hardly slowed down, as Wild Side Guide Eve Annunziato found out when she tried to keep up with Bertha on several of her nature walks.

Even with a body that’s becoming a little frail, Bertha keeps going, although she doesn’t give as many official tours as she used to.  She turns 93 years-old this fall (2013) and still enjoys hiking when the weather is warmer, especially with her grandchildren—if they can keep up with her that is! Bertha says it’s important for her to encourage the younger generation to explore the outdoors and appreciate the beauty of nature!
