Nature at Home: Bird Identification

From Carolina chickadees and tufted titmice to dark-eyed juncos and white-breasted nuthaches, learn how to identify the over 400 species of birds found in Tennessee.

Bird lovers abound across our state. Some venture out, hoping to identify as many birds as possible. Others enjoy watching birds at home, but are not quite sure which bird is which. In this Nature at Home segment we share some backyard bird identification tips that will help build your bird knowledge.

If you want to find out more about birding in TN, email the TWRA’s bird experts at twra.birds@state.tn.us. They can answer just about any question you have and they’ve got great resources like a handy field checklist. You can also visit their Watchable Wildlife website.

If you’re interested in getting more involved in birding, the Tennessee Ornithological Society is a great resource. The Tennessee Ornithological Society is an independent, non-profit, educational and scientific organization devoted to the study and conservation of birds. There are 10 chapters across the state with a membership that includes hundreds of people engaged in all aspects of bird study at all levels – from back yard birders to professional biologists

And if just learning on your own is more your style, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology is a great on-line resource.
